Lowes: “I feel good and relaxed”

Under the lap record, Sam Lowes takes pole position for the Moto2™ World Championship race in Jerez.

Before any rider turned a wheel in Qualifying, everyone had a feeling that Takaaki Nakagami’s (Idemitsu Honda Team Asia) new lap record would have to be beaten to secure pole. Moto2™ riders had set some blistering times during testing and Nakagami’s lap was a hint of what was possible. Few knew just how quickly the times would fall; the likes of Jonas Folger (Dynavolt Intact GP) were immediately under the lap record as Qualifying began in near perfect conditions. Sam Lowes left his run late, but when he did push for a fast time he absolutely flew around the Jerez circuit. The Brit would claim pole position with a 1’42.408 and set a new pole position record in the process. Both of Lowes’ two fastest lap time would have secured him pole, proving he’s quick and consistent.
This is Lowes’ second pole of the year and his fifth in the Moto2™ class. His previous 2016 pole position in Argentina went on to produce a podium finish and Lowes is at least in contention for the top three steps, if not the pinnacle of the podium itself. Sunday also presents Lowes with a great chance to extend his championship lead as many of his rivals are starting outside of the top six.
Sam Lowes: “It was a very tight qualifying session! I got a good lap time, also completing a lot of fast laps. We worked hard all weekend on used tyres and we have a good race pace: after the positive tests carried out here in the winter we started the weekend with a good base set-up, and the bike is working quite similar to the tests because the conditions are not too hot this weekend, so I feel good and relaxed. It was nice to arrive in Europe leading the standings and obviously it’s nice to get the pole position! Tomorrow we can have a good race and fight for the win!”
